CRUZ DUFRESNE

“Holy shit, Arrow, someone really gave Joss this picture of her brother? That’s fucked up.”

Thorn stared at the piece of paper I’d passed him, shaking his head.

“I agree. It’s pretty damn aggressive. They are clearly getting desperate for whatever it is they’re after,” Arrow said.

I went over to the suite’s safe, opened it, and returned with the cross-body satchel that had been at the center of Booker’s disappearance.

I set it on the table in front of us. “Why would they want a bag that just has gym clothes in it?”

Arrow turned the bag over and examined it from several angles. “Whatever it is they want, it’s not fucking gym clothes.”

I watched him examine the bag, as we all had countless times already. “After all that went down today, Arrow, I’m thinking Joss is not safe here in DC. What do you think about having her come to the ranch in Montana? It’s doubtful they’d think to look for her there.”

Thorn nodded. “That might be a good idea. You take her back to Montana while Arrow and I work on finding Booker.”

I couldn’t deny it, my pulse kicked up at the thought of bringing Joss home with me. She was a cool, kick-ass woman, and I’d love to show her what ranch life was all about. I was also dying to kiss her if she were open to it.

I was pretty much an evangelist for the simpler life. Unfortunately, so far, no amount of convincing had swayed Arrow from New York, or Thorn from San Francisco, even temporarily. But I held out hope that they’d at least let themselves enjoy the ranch once or twice a year.

I’d love to show it to Joss if the timing were right.

“On the other hand, guys,” I added reluctantly, “since whoever is trying to get to her is being so persistent, maybe it’s best to keep her here in order to lead us to Booker.”

“Why is my door open?”

We whipped around to see Joss standing in the doorway that joined our rooms, wrapped in an oversized hotel bathrobe, her hair sexily tousled.

And pissed as hell.

“This door needs to stay open, Joss. We can’t risk having you sneak out again,” Thorn said. “Sorry.”

He wasn’t worry. None of us were.

She glared at him. “What? That’s bullshit.”

I stood to try to diffuse the situation. “Now, Joss, if you’d just listen—”

But when her face turned bright pink, I knew an explosion was imminent.

She entered our suite, arms swinging. “It’s one thing to be here in this hotel, and I appreciate all you’re doing for my brother and me, even if it sometimes doesn’t seem like it. But I need a certain amount of privacy. This open door idea… goes too far.”

I raised my hands. “You’ll have all the privacy you need, Joss—”

Not good enough.

Her voice got louder. “Why can’t we just give that goddamn bag to the people after it and get my brother? It seems like a simple exchange to me, and I don’t know what’s taking so damn long, or what’s so complicated about it.
